“New Music Gala” Highlights Marimba Festival Weekend
The 8th annual Zeltsman Marimba Festival continues with concerts Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Festival faculty members Ivana Bilic of Croatia and Jean Geoffroy (l.) of France perform July 3.  ZMF Artistic Director Nancy Zeltsman (r.) and Jack Van Geem, principal percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony, perform Saturday both as duo partners and as soloists.  Sunday’s “New Music Gala” concert will be a historic celebration of 24 new marimba solos written by composers Lyle Mays, Gunther Schuller, and Lawrence’s own Alvina Tan ’06, among others.  The Friday (7/3)and Saturday (7/4) concerts are both at 8 p.m. in Harper Hall.  Sunday’s (7/5) concert, which is free, begins at 2 p.m. in Stansbury Theatre, with a pre-concert talk starting at 1 p.m. Get ticket information.

Season Tickets on Sale for 2009-10 Artist, Jazz Series

A line-up of exceptional international performers — some rising stars, others familiar faces — bring their musical virtuosity to the stage for the eight-concert 2009-10 Lawrence Artist and Jazz Series.  The Grammy-nominated quintet Imani Winds opens the 101st Artist Series in October while acclaimed Metropolitan Opera tenor Anthony Dean Griffey (r.) performs in April.  The annual Jazz Celebration Weekend kicks off the Jazz Series in November with singer Steve March Tormé.  Bobby McFerrin (l.), a 10-time Grammy winner, brings his innovative vocal techniques to campus in February.  Season subscriptions are available through the LU Box Office, 920-832-6749.  Individual concert tickets go on sale Sept. 16.  See the complete series schedules and ticket information. Daniel O’Connor Wins Regional Organ Competition
Daniel O'Connor ’11 earned first-place honors June 28 at the American Guild of Organists’ Regional Competition for Young Organists in Albuquerque, N.M., one of nine held around the country. O’Connor’s winning performance earned him "Rising Star" designation and an invitation to perform in Washington, D.C. at the AGO’s 2010 national convention next July.  The RYOC is considered the country's most prestigious competition for emerging organists.   Read more.

Hoft-March, Hixon Appointed to Endowed Professorships
Professor of French Eilene Hoft-March has been named to the Milwaukee-
Downer College and College Endowment Association Professorship and Associate Professor of Government William Hixon has been named to the Gordon R. Clapp Chair in American Studies.  Appointments to endowed professorships recognize academic distinction through teaching excellence and/or scholarly achievement.  Read more.

Current Wriston Exhibition Showcases Senior Art Majors
The annual senior art exhibition opens in the Wriston Art Center galleries Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. with a reception with the student artists.  The exhibition presents the work of 14 senior art majors, and includes works of ceramic, felt, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video. It runs through August 2.  Read more.

Lawrence recognized eight alumni for career achievements, contributions to the betterment of society or volunteer service to Lawrence during the annual Reunion Weekend celebration.  Read more.



NY Times Columnist Honored at 160th Commencement
Award-winning journalist Bob Herbert, op-ed columnist for the New York Times, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree Sunday, June 14 at Lawrence’s 160th commencement. In his remarks to the graduating seniors, Herbert urged the students to "slow down," leave the cell phone at home on occasion, and focus on making time for those people who mean the most to them. Commencement Brings Honors to Four Faculty Members
Four members of the faculty were recognized Sunday, June 14 for excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative activity at Lawrence’s 160th commencement.  Art historian Michael Orr (upper left) received the Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Director of Bands Andrew Mast (upper right.) was presented the Young Teacher Award.  Professor of Mathematics Bruce Pourciau (lower left) received the Award for Excellence in Scholarship.  Assistant Professor of English David McGlynn (lower right.) was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Creative Activity.  Read more.

Prof. Chaney Presents "College and the Final Exam"
William Chaney, George McKendree Steele Professor Emeritus of History, delivered the address "College and the Final Exam" Saturday, June 13 during Lawrence’s annual baccalaureate service for members of the Class of 2009 and their families. A member of the Lawrence faculty for 57 years, Prof. Chaney explored the relationship between academics and religion in his remarks.  Listen to his address.

Anonymous Donor Makes $10 Million Commitment to LU
An anonymous LU graduate has made a $10 million bequest commitment to the college. Among the largest commitments in LU history, the $10 million future gift will support the endowment, including the establishment of an endowed professorship in the conservatory of music.  A portion of the gift also will be used to bolster the endowment for Bjorklunden, with additional funds from the gift designated for campus facilities maintenance and general operations.  Read more.
