Theatre Arts Department Presents “Cinderella”
The rags-to-riches fairy tale "Cinderella" comes to Lawrence's Stansbury Theatre in four performances of the Rodgers and Hammerstein television classic.  The musical will be performed at 8 p.m. Nov. 20, 21 and 23, with a 3 p.m. matinee Nov. 22. The production features the full orchestration from the original 1957 TV versionr.  Tickets are available at the Lawrence Box Office, 920-832-6749.  Read more.

Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble Launch Live Webcast
Alban Berg’s daunting masterwork  “Chamber Concerto for Violin, Piano and 13 Winds” highlights the LU Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble concert Saturday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel.  The WE's performance of “Chamber Concerto” will include guest soloists Anthony Padilla, piano, and Wen-Lei Gu, violin.  Student conductor Felicia Behm ’09 will lead the SB in Percy Grainger’s “Children’s March.”  The concert will make history as Lawrence’s first official live webcast.  The college invites parents, alumni, prospective students, and fans from around the globe to hear the wonderful music that Lawrence students and faculty are making. The Chapel just got a whole lot bigger…if you can’t be there in person, be sure to tune in.

Benefit Concert for Haitian Hurricane Relief, Education
A benefit concert featuring all Haitian music will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in Harper Hall.  The program includes musicians from Lawrence and the community performing traditional Haitian drumming, folkloric dancing, and an orchestral work as well as a presentation by LU students who have volunteered as educators at music camps in Haiti. All proceeds will be used to support hurricane relief as well as music and education programs in Haiti.  Read more.

Benefit Concert for Pianist Julia Steinbach
A benefit concert to help defray medical bills for Julia Steinbach, an accompanist to Lawrence conservatory and academy students for the past 20 years, will be held Saturday Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 325 E. Franklin St., Appleton.  The concert will feature the Lawrence Academy of Music’s Bel Canto Girl Choir, as well as piano, string, organ and chamber performances. A reception with Steinbach, who is battling breast cancer, follows the concert. Freewill offerings will be accepted at the concert or donations can be sent to Julia Steinbach Benefit Fund, Community First Credit Union, P.O. Box 1487, Appleton, WI  54912-1487.

LUPE Concert Features Classical, Non-Western Works
Classical ensemble and non-Western works highlight the Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble (LUPE) concert Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel.  Under the direction of Professor Dane Richeson, LUPE will perform two large scored pieces — “Desperate Attitudes” by Gordon Stout and “Whispers” by David Skidmore — that incorporate marimbas, vibraphones, glockenspiels, timpani and roto toms. The Sambistas and Kinkaviwo will perform Brazilian and Ghananian drumming, respectively.  And keeping with tradition, audience members will be invited on stage to dance to Kinkaviwo’s closing piece. 

LAM Band Concert Features Percussion Ensemble Debut
The Lawrence Academy of Music’s new percussion ensemble, under the direction of Stacey Stolz ’11, makes its concert debut with the LAM symphonic band and wind ensemble Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel.  A musical collage, the concert will include vocal soloist Sheri Williams-Pannell singing “Amazing Grace” the joyful “Greek Folk Song Suite” by Franco Cesarini and William Latham’s “Brighton Beach,” among others. Tickets, at $6, are available at the Lawrence Box Office, 920-832-6749.

Anthropology Students Earn Second National Award
Ashlan Falletta-Cowden ’09 and Sveinn Sigurdsson ’09 will receive the Christine Wilson Award this week at the national meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco.  Presented by the Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition, the award recognizes undergraduate research that combines perspectives in nutrition or food studies and anthropology. They also will present their paper “Lamb, Pasta, and Changing Traditions:  A Case Study of Icelandic Dietary Modernization” on Sunday, Nov. 23.  The paper is based on field research they conducted in Iceland in 2007 under the direction of Associate Professor of Anthropology Mark Jenike.  This is the second national research award for Sigurdsson and Falletta-Cowden, who were recognized earlier this year by the Association for the Study of Food and Society in New Orleans.
